Protect Yourself from Disaster Related Scams - Mar 2025
In times of crisis, scammers often target those affected by natural disasters — including the recent Southern California fires. Fraudsters may pose as relief organizations, government agencies, or contractors to steal personal information or money. As your trusted credit union, we want to help you recognize common scams and protect your finances.
Common Disaster Scams to Watch For
- FEMA Impersonation Scams
- Scammers may claim to be from FEMA or other government agencies offering disaster relief. They may ask for personal information, payment, or banking details to “process your claim.”
- ✔ Stay Safe: FEMA will never charge for disaster assistance. Always verify their identity by calling 800.621.3362 or visiting disasterassistance.gov.
- Fake Charity Scams
- Fraudulent charities may appear after disasters, asking for donations that never reach those in need.
- ✔ Stay Safe: Only donate to trusted organizations. Research charities through Charity Navigator before giving.
- Contractor Scams
- Fraudulent contractors may offer quick repairs for fire, flood, or storm damage — often demanding upfront payment without completing the work.
- ✔ Stay Safe: Verify licenses through the California Contractors State License Board at cslb.ca.gov and never pay in full before work begins.
- Insurance & Government Impersonation Calls
- Scammers may contact you claiming to expedite insurance claims or government assistance — for a fee.
- ✔ Stay Safe: Contact your insurance provider or government agency directly using official contact information.
